EC Annual Conference

The Exceptional Children Division of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, through its strategic plan, is committed to increasing the performance of students with disabilities, thereby enhancing their ability to graduate and achieve productive post-secondary outcomes. It is critical that all who have a stake in impacting the lives of our students – parents/families, special education teachers, related service personnel, psychologists, regular education teachers, administrators – collaborate to help them thrive each day and into the future.

The Exceptional Children Division is pleased to invite colleagues from across the state to join us for the Annual Conference on Exceptional Children. This annual collegial event is an opportunity to share and learn about innovations and exciting practices to help exceptional children achieve.

Numerous enriching activities include:

  • An uplifting Plenary Session with inspiring keynote presentation;
  • 90+ informative Instructional Sessions covering the broad spectrum of exceptional children education;
  • Educators of Excellence reception honoring outstanding North Carolina special educators;
  • Poster Display of innovative programs and practices;
  • School-Based Enterprise Bazaar showcasing products created and marketed by North Carolina Public School students with disabilities;
  • Exhibitor/Vendor area that offers interactions with organizations and companies specializing in serving exceptional children.

Come be an integral part of this annual gathering in Greensboro of more than 3,000 professionals and parents, all working together to improve educational outcomes for all students!

2022 71st Conference on Exceptional Children

November 2 - 4, 2022

The general Conference will be held November 3-4, 2022, at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. Each year thousands of special education teachers, administrators, related service providers, community partners, and families of students with disabilities gather at this event to learn, network and celebrate exemplary practice models, people, and content. As we celebrate this milestone of the 71st Conference, we are excited to announce this year’s theme: Lighthouse Leadership:  Bringing Light to the Future.

Educators of Excellence reception honoring outstanding North Carolina special educators will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022. 

Poster Presentations - Poster presentations are a way to display and share innovative programs, practices, interventions, and research in the field of Special Education and Related Services for Exceptional Children. You are invited to submit a proposal to present your research or practice in the field. Selection will be based on a rubric. If selected, you will be asked to present during two designated 90-minute sessions at the EC Conference on Thursday, November 3rd. This is not intended for vendors or non-profit organizations to share their information but must be focused on educational research, programs, practices, methodologies, interventions and/or pedagogies.

CALL FOR GENERAL CONFERENCE SESSION PROPOSALS 

The Exceptional Children Division is pleased to announce that the Call for Proposals for general conference instructional sessions for the 70th Conference on Exceptional Children is now open through August 25, 2021. The general Conference will be held November 18-19, 2021, at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro. Each year thousands of special education teachers, administrators, related service providers, community partners, and families of students with disabilities gather at this event to learn, network and celebrate exemplary practice models, people, and content. As we celebrate this milestone of 70 Conferences, we are excited to announce this year’s theme is: “Going Platinum: Honoring the Past, Treasuring the Present, Shaping the Future.”

INSTRUCTIONAL SESSIONS: The Division is seeking proposals for 90-minute instructional sessions on a wide variety of topics pertaining to the education of students with disabilities. These sessions will be held on Thursday, November 18, and Friday, November 19. Please visit the following link for more information and to submit a proposal: CLOSED

In lieu of the regular Educator of Excellence celebration, which will not occur this year due to the cancellation of the annual Conference on Exceptional Children, the Exceptional Children Division has created a new way for districts to recognize outstanding educators, related service personnel and special education support staff providing services to students with disabilities during this unprecedented time.

Exceptional Children Program Directors and Coordinators were invited to recognize Extraordinarily Exceptional Educators in their district throughout the 2020-2021 academic year. 

The following professionals are recognized as outstanding teachers, related service personnel, and special education support staff serving students with disabilities in their district, charter school, residential school, or state operated program. Please join the Exceptional Children Division in congratulating each professional on his or her extraordinary dedication and excellence to students. Bravo!
