High Leverage Practices for Students with Disabilities, specifically Collaboration and Assessment, will be introduced and connected to effective special education evaluation planning and implementation. Analysis of the information that leads to the referral will be discussed as the basis for sound evaluation planning.

Collaboration is a long-established best practice in education, supported by IDEA, High Leverage Practices, literature and evidence from special education, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, physical therapy, and psychological disciplines. This virtual session will explore key features of collaborative practice for developing and implementing effective IEPs. Full day in-person workshops are also offered to compliment this foundational content and go into more depth with applied activities.

Implementing HLPs for the OTP Webinar Series is structured using the High Leverage Practices (HLPs) for Students with Disabilities Pillars. This session will focus on Data-Driven Planning HLPs with direct application to best practices for school-based occupational therapy. Effective occupational therapy evaluation practices will be discussed including educationally relevant, top down, student-centered, strengths-based, and comprehensive approaches (Frolek Clark & Rioux, 2019).

This virtual session is intended for occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) new to NC school-based OT (less than ~3 years) including new graduates and OTPs transitioning from other settings or states. An overview will be provided of important resources and information pertaining to school-based OT in NC public schools. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in Q&A.
