End-of-Grade (EOG)

Overview

The North Carolina End-of-Grade (EOG) Tests are designed to measure student performance on the goals, objectives, and grade-level competencies specified in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study.

  • Mathematics (Grades 3–8)
  • Reading (Grades 3–8)
  • Science (Grades 5 and 8)

The EOGs are part of the North Carolina Personalized Assessment Tool (NCPAT) system, which is a through-grade assessment system. The NCPAT is comprised of an interim component, the NC Check-Ins 2.0, to inform instruction during the school year and a multistage adaptive EOG component administered at the end of the year.

Purpose

The General Assembly GCS 115C-174.10T specified the purpose of the North Carolina State Testing Program as:

  • “(i) to assure that all high school graduates possess those minimum skills and that knowledge thought necessary to function as a member of society;
  • (ii) to provide a means of identifying strengths and weaknesses in the education process in order to improve instructional delivery; and
  • (iii) to establish additional means for making the education system at the State, local, and school levels accountable to the public for results.”

Test results will be used for school and district accountability under the accountability model and for federal reporting purposes.
