Design Review Submittal Procedures

PSUs and their Design Teams are responsible for making timely and complete project review submittals and including adequate review periods when developing project schedules.  School Planning typically issues design review comments within 30 days of each design phase submittal.  Upon completion of the design review process, a Certificate of Review will be issued for the project.

NOTE!  Schematic Design (SD) review meetings are available for all projects.  We offer two meeting options – virtual or in-person.  When a new submittal is received for large or complex projects, an assigned reviewer will contact the design team to schedule an SD review meeting time.  This effort is intended to ensure that any critical project issues are identified early to allow timely resolution without disruption of ongoing design work.

School Planning professionals conduct design reviews for new schools, additions, and renovations.  Design reviews ensure that school facilities accommodate modern educational program requirements.

Design reviews encompass code compliance, life safety, longevity, durability, economy, and efficiency of building construction systems.  Comments address local program flexibility while providing accountability with regard to the North Carolina Public Schools Facilities Guidelines.

Design review conferences are available at each design phase, offering design teams and school administrators the opportunity to meet with the School Planning staff of architects, engineers, and programmatic specialists.
