Planning Year

What is a planning year?

Charter school boards that have their application approved by the State Board of Education are given a planning year in which to prepare for their first school year. The Office of Charter Schools (OCS) provides trainings on important information that is relevant to opening a successful charter school. During the planning year OCS also provides technical assistance and guidance to these charter schools.

Planning Year: Planning Sessions

Congratulations on receiving approval to open a new charter school!

The Office of Charter Schools will be providing full-day professional development sessions that will be vital for the successful opening of your charter school. As a charter applicant, your time for planning is at a premium and these workshops are designed to provide you up-to-date information and technical assistance as you prepare to open your charter school. It is critical that most of the founding board members and any identified or hired school leaders attend each session.

Professional development days will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end no later than 4:30 p.m. Each session will be held in room 150 at the Department of Public Instruction at 301 N. Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC.

Your commitment to the school's educational vision, making decisions in an objective manner, and the work you do to ensure a positive educational experience for students will directly influence children's futures and the future of our society. Attendance at the planning year sessions will help you reflect upon and implement all of the work necessary to meet this great responsibility.
