Best Fit Objectives for Integrating the Holocaust & Holocaust and Genocide Related Topics into Social Studies Instruction

In November of 2021, the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act (GAHEA) was passed in North Carolina. One of the primary provisions of North Carolina's GAHEA states that..."The State Board of Education shall review the middle school and high school standard course of study and, [ . . .] shall integrate into English, social studies courses, and other courses, as appropriate, education on the Holocaust and genocide..." 

In compliance with this provision, the NCDPI K-12 Social Studies team performed an extensive review of the standards in each middle and high school social studies course. As a result of the review, the Social Studies team was able to identify the specific objectives of each course that best align with teaching about the Holocaust or topics related to the Holocaust and genocide.

Curated Holocaust Resources

The Middle School and High School hyperlinks below offer a carefully curated selection of links to resources that can be used by teachers incorporating historical topics that provide a foundation for the understanding the Holocaust, the Holocaust and Holocaust related topics. These curated links are to resources that have been aligned with appropriate standards in social studies courses, grades 6-12. Teachers have flexibility in selecting the resources that best suit their classrooms.

The NC Holocaust Files

The NC Holocaust Files is a meticulously crafted series of short-form educational videos exploring the Holocaust from an uncommon perspective. These videos delve into lesser-known aspects of each video's topic, aiming to shed light on stories often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Designed to complement classroom lessons, each video has undergone extensive research, review, and vetting by Holocaust education experts to ensure accuracy and authenticity. Tailored for students in grades 6-12, these videos offer age-appropriate insights, providing valuable resources to educators seeking to enhance their curriculum with engaging and informative content. To further enhance the educational experience, discussion guides have been created to accompany each video, offering purposeful activities aimed at enriching student comprehension through reflective exercises, emotive responses, and comparative analyses.

The NC Holocaust Files Video Series

The NC History Unfolded Fellows Inquiry-Based Micro-Q Project 

The documents below are resources developed through the 2024 NC History Unfolded Fellows Project – Cohort II, a collaboration led by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the DBQ Project. These materials are designed to support K–12 Social Studies educators in implementing inquiry-based instruction rooted in the Document-Based Question (DBQ) Project framework. These resources are structured as Micro-Qs, which are short, structured inquiries focused on a single compelling question and the analysis of one single primary source. Micro-Qs are a trademark of the DBQ Project and are designed to be completed in a single class period and provide a focused opportunity for students to practice historical thinking, evidence analysis, and argumentative writing. These Micro-Qs can be used in both ELA and social studies classrooms.

Each NCHUF Micro-Qs are organized around six sections and end in a culminating writing assignment. The Micro-Qs in this project has two N.C. specific components.

  • The Micro-Q Compelling Question and Overview Information – A NC Specific Component
  • A Hook Exercise
  • A Background Information Essay
  • Analysis of ONLY 1 Document
  • Building A Thesis Statement (Pre-Bucketing) – A NC Specific Component
  • A Culminating Writing Exercise

The NC History Unfolded Fellows Project

The documents below are the outcomes of the 2023 NCDPI K-12 Social Studies NC History Unfolded Fellows Project. This project has resulted in a comprehensive repository of curriculum materials tailored for teaching Holocaust-related topics in 8th grade NC & US History, American History, and Civic Literacy. Utilizing NC newspaper articles from 1933 to 1946 and primary source artifacts from the WWII and Holocaust era found in the NC State Archives, each curriculum document aims to enhance teacher capacity in teaching the Holocaust while promoting the use of primary sources for educators focusing on state and local history and government.
