View the document version of this memo.

Introduction

S681 passed in June of 2020 and became Session Law SL2020-78 in July. Please see March 2022 Message to the Field for more background information.

In order to accurately track courses which satisfy the arts education graduation requirement, it is imperative to ensure arts education courses are correct, including the middle school local electives codes which were released in Spring 2022.

New Course Codes

Any course that does not deliver the entirety of the Standard Course of Study of the arts education discipline should use a local elective code. Examples could include courses students take for nine weeks in a “wheel” rotation, locally developed history of hip-hop courses, or audio mixing/producing courses coded as music courses which do not utilize the Music SCOS. Options for coding these courses are listed below:

Middle School Courses

  • 51312Y0: 6-8 Dance Local Elective
  • 52972Y0: 6-8 Music Local Elective
  • 53812Y0: 6-8 Theatre Arts Local Elective
  • 54212Y0: 6-8 Visual Arts Local Elective
  • 57002Y0: 6-8 Other Local Arts Elective

High School Courses

  • 51302X0: 9-12 Dance Local Elective
  • 52962X0: 9-12 Music Local Elective
  • 53802X0: 9-12 Theatre Arts Local Elective
  • 54202X0: 9-12 Visual Arts Local Elective
  • 57002X0: 9-12 Other Local Arts Elective
  • 57005X0: 9-12 Other Local Arts Elective Honors

These codes might be used for courses which teach only appreciation or history of an artform, a specific technological tool for a current artform (i.e. Audacity or ProTools), or a shortened course designed to simply expose students to a portion of the artform. Media Arts courses with a locally developed curriculum should use the “57” codes.

Tab/Accordion Items

Over many years, the Arts Ed team has crafted the Arts Ed Administrator Guides, or “Look-For” documents, for principals and other administrators that are a K-12 Teacher Evaluation Support Tool for the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System (NCEES) Standards 1-5.

Each Arts Ed Administrator Guide starts with an overview of an arts education program, followed by information about the structure and goals of the Arts Education Essential Standards and Comprehensive Arts Education, and then a compilation of model practices, organized and aligned according to NCEES. The information also includes language familiar to the National Core Arts Standards to best reflect what artistic practices students and teachers are engaging in during the class period.

District Arts Education Leaders (DAELs) meet twice a year for updates from NCDPI and the field.

Please check to see that you are on the DAEL directory spreadsheet or email brandon.roeder@dpi.nc.gov for details.

Tab/Accordion Paragraph

Accessing Federal Funding to Support NC Arts Education

Learn more about the eligible uses of funds in the ESSER III law and how NC Districts are using the funding to support Arts Education learning loss and strengthen programs regardless of declined enrollment. Guest Speakers: Lynn Tuttle (Director of Public Policy, Research and Professional Development for the National Association for Music Education), and Nate McGaha (Executive Director of ArtsNC). Panelists: James Daugherty (Davidson County Schools) and Leigh Ann Little (Guilford County Schools).

In an effort to provide exemplary leadership to District Arts Education Leaders (DAELs), the Arts Education Team at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has prepared this workbook to aid DAELs in advancing Arts Education opportunities for all NC students through the process of strategic improvement based in research. This document is presented as a force-copy workbook for cohort members to gather their research in an organized fashion. The cohort process starts with performing an environmental scan of the member’s Public School Unit (PSU) arts education program, followed by making an informed assessment of the program. The collected data and assessment will lead to an action plan outlining 1-3 key recommendations rooted in scholarly research to address the most pressing needs of the PSU’s arts education program. As a final step, members will prepare and deliver a presentation to the cohort before submitting the plan to their local PSU leadership. It is the intention of the NCDPI Arts Education Team to continue to mentor the DAELs throughout the implementation of their proposed action plan upon approval of their PSU leadership.

Stay tuned for our next application cycle!
