Description: This professional development training will focus on the receptive and expressive vocabulary development of students with hearing loss of varying age ranges. This session will provide skills, strategies, and resources needed to teach vocabulary and word learning strategies to students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Participants will be granted 6 hours (0.6 CEU Credits) for attending this in-person training.
Audience: Teachers of the D/HH, EC Teachers, SLPs, Interpreters/Transliterators, Language Facilitators, and any professional who works with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in public schools in North Carolina.
Course Objectives: 1. Understand the role vocabulary plays in literacy development and skilled reading. 2. Identify the typical rate of learning vocabulary. 3. Learn & practice strategies on how to teach vocabulary for different ages/skill levels. 4. Learn resources for identifying what vocabulary to teach. 5. Understand the importance of vocabulary assessment and progress monitoring.
