See-the-Sound Visual Phonics

Course Description: STS-VP is a system unique handshapes and written symbols that represent the sounds of English. This visual, kinesthetic tool supports language and literacy development for students in the areas of phonemic awareness, decoding, encoding, and speech/oral language. STS-VP is a tool that is meant to be used with a comprehensive reading instruction program to support student learning and phonological awareness skills and is extremely beneficial to students who rely on a visual mode of communication. In this hands-on training, participants will be introduced to some of the theory and research on STS-VP, learn the handshapes and written symbols, and practice using the system in hands-on activities. Participants will discuss the considerations for deaf and hard of hearing students, complete homework assignments, and collaborate with each other on ways to implement STS-VP into lesson plans. 

 

Course Objectives: 

  • To explore the rationale behind See the Sound: Visual Phonics (STS-VP) and the impact it has on diverse learners. 
  • To establish a working knowledge of STS-VP handshapes and written symbols.  
  • To explore a variety of activities that model the integration of STS-VP into classroom and instructional settings. 

Audience: Teachers of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing, Speech-Language Pathologists, EC Teachers, Educational Interpreters, and Spoken Language Facilitators. Additionally, Reading Specialists and Teachers of EL students can benefit from this training. 

Format/Hours: This is a 2-day in person training with outside homework assignments, totaling 14 hours (1.4 CEU credits.)
