The successive process of special education evaluations, including IDEA’s mandates, will be reviewed, grounded in principles connected to educational equity (fairness and inclusivity). High Leverage Practices for Students with Disabilities, specifically Collaboration and Assessment, will be introduced and connected to fair and inclusive special education evaluation planning and implementation. Analysis of the information that leads to the referral will be discussed as the basis for sound evaluation planning. Participants will review the requirements to adhere to with every evaluation. An organizational framework (ICEL/RIOT) will be presented as a model for synthesizing the multiple sources of data collected within the evaluation and applying these sources to eligibility and instructional planning decisions. Participants will apply ICEL/RIOT for a sample area of suspected disability and identify a variety of potential data sources which align with educational disability characteristics. IEP/evaluation team members directly involved in referral/evaluation meetings are encouraged to attend.
