Joint Statement from NC Superintendent of Public Instruction Maurice "Mo" Green and SBE Chair Eric Davis and Vice Chair Alan Duncan on the Proposed Constitutional Amendments on State Income and Local Property Taxes

While North Carolina's public schools are achieving historic results with their graduation rates and its students earning career and technical education credentials and passing college-level courses and exams while still in high school, more funding is needed to sustain and improve on these results so that all North Carolina public school students receive an excellent education.  When North Carolina is already near the absolute bottom in the country in funding for public education on a per-pupil basis and more than $3,000 to $5,000 less per pupil than even Virginia and South Carolina, respectively, according to the Education Law Center's Making the Grade 2025 report, it is unwise to further constrain state and local policymakers’ ability to adequately fund public education for our 1.5 million students.  As a result, although we can appreciate a desire to limit tax burdens on North Carolinians, the proposed constitutional amendments related to the state income taxes and local property taxes are not the way to do it.
