World Languages Standards & Instructional Toolkit Resources

The proficiency-based North Carolina World Language Essential Standards (WLES) were adopted by the North Carolina State Board of Education in September 2010 and implemented beginning in the 2012-2013 academic year.

The WLES are available with a variety of  Instructional Toolkit components, including the WLES Crosswalk, five WLES Unpacking documents, WLES support documents for Global Education and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), and reference materials with information about World Languages and 21st Century skills, national standards, the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, and proficiency vs. performance.

Teacher & Classroom Resources

The Teacher & Classroom Resources section of the World Languages Resources Hub has standards-based resources were developed for K-12 World Language classrooms for use by individual teachers, departments, charter schools, districts, etc. and include:

  • Assessment Examples
  • Bridging Documents
  • Clarifying Objectives by Course Outcomes (COCOs) documents for curriculum writing
  • Graphic Organizers for the 8 proficiency levels in the WLES
  • Language-specific information with online curriculum resources
  • LinguaFolio classroom materials for World Languages

Administrator & Program Resources

The Administrator & Program Resources section of the World Languages Resources Hub has  standards-based resources were developed for K-12 World Language programs for use by department heads, building administrators, central office coordinators and administrators, and other stakeholders, and include:

  • Administrator Guides for World Languages
  • Advanced Programs information (AP, CIE, and IB)
  • Crosswalks of World Language High School Courses with Community College Courses, the NCDPI Approved Assessments for the GLE, and World Language Course Codes for CDM
  • DL/I Program resources, including professional learning, research, standards, etc.
  • International Partnerships information for North Carolina's MOUs with China, France, and Spain
  • Communications area where the archived #WLWednesdays and World Languages #SettingTheStandard updates are available
